Nocona ISD bond measure passes 62-38 — new gymnasium approved.
Nocona ISD voters approved a $4.1 million bond measure on Saturday by a margin of 62 percent to 38 percent, clearing the way for a replacement gymnasium at Nocona High School. The current gym was built in 1961 and has been flagged in two consecutive facility assessments as deficient in structural reinforcement and HVAC capacity.
Turnout was 18 percent of registered voters — above average for a May bond election in Montague County. The measure needed a simple majority to pass. District superintendent Carla Webb said the district will solicit design bids in late summer with a groundbreaking target of spring 2027.
The new facility will seat approximately 1,200 and include updated locker rooms, auxiliary practice space, and a dedicated weight room. The current gym seats 800. Webb said the district also expects the new building to be available for community use outside of school hours, which the 1961 structure's mechanical limitations currently prevent. Bond proceeds will not affect the tax rate, which the district locked at the 2024 certified rate through 2029.
