Founding
The Stoneburg townsite dates to 1893 with the arrival of the Chicago, Rock Island and Texas Railway; the broader settlement in the surrounding country goes back to the early 1870s. Stoneburg's principal historical anchor in available sources is the April 26, 1906 Bellevue–Stoneburg tornado — an F4 storm that crossed the Montague County–Clay County boundary and killed 17 people across both communities, three of them in Stoneburg, a proportionally catastrophic loss for a settlement of its size.
