Founding
Joe Harris, a land speculator, established the townsite in 1892 at the intersection of the Rock Island Line and MKT railroad, originally naming it Harrisonia. When the post-office application was rejected, Harris renamed the community Ringgold after his wife's family, and the post office opened the same year.
